CONTACT PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES RE NAU
Thus far, GOP Presidential candidates Ron Paul, Tom
Tancredo, Duncan Hunter, and Sam Brownback have taken firm stands in
opposition to the North American Union (NAU).
It is time we heard from the others.
Readers of this blog should contact Messrs. Giuliani,
McCain, Romney, Huckabee, Fred Thompson, and Tommy Thompson to see where
they stand on this crucial issue.
In a recent interview with "WorldNetDaily" posted on July
20, Brownback said "I do not support a North American Union. I disagree
fundamentally with that and I think the United States should be governing
itself and not be being governed by multilateral unions."
Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, and Duncan Hunter are each
co-sponsors of Congressman Virgil Goode’s House Concurrent Resolution 40,
which states:
"(1) the United States should not engage in the
construction of a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
Superhighway System;
"(2) the United States should not allow the Security and
Prosperity Partnership (SPP) to implement further regulations that would
create a North American Union with Mexico and Canada; and
"(3) the President of the United States should indicate
strong opposition to these acts or any other proposals that threaten the
sovereignty of the United States."
In September, 1973, when I had left my position as Director
of the United States Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), a testimonial
dinner was held in my honor and the three principal speakers were Chuck
Colson, New Hampshire Governor Meldrim Thomson, and Dr. Harold O.J. Brown.
I have followed Dr. Brown’s writings in the decades since
and regard him as one of the most brilliant, articulate, and insightful
Christian apologists of the last several decades.
I learned today that Dr. Brown died on Sunday, July 8, and
was subsequently buried in Florida. A memorial service will be held in
Charlotte, North Carolina on July 28.
In 1993, as President of The Conservative Caucus Foundation,
I led a geostrategic tour of Europe which brought our group to Brussels. On
that occasion, we were graciously hosted by former Tennessee Congressman
Robin Beard, then serving as Assistant Secretary General of NATO.
Beard was an excellent member of Congress and a good friend.
We regret his passing.
"Robin Beard, a former Republican House Member from
Tennessee, died on Saturday, in South Carolina after a year long battle with
a brain tumor. He was 67.
"Representing Tennessee’s 6th district, Beard was
an authority on national security issues and served on the Armed Services
Committee.
"He was a Member from 1972 to 1983, when he retired after
unsuccessfully running for a Senate seat. He later served as NATO’s
assistant secretary general for defense support.
"At the time of his death, he was living in Charleston
County, S.C., where he was running for a seat on the county’s school board.
He also ran last year but was not elected.
"Beard’s colleagues have fond memories of the politician
whom they describe as both friendly and easygoing.
" ‘Regardless of whether you agreed with him politically,
Robin was the kind of guy who would always greet you with a big smile. When
I think of him, I think of his tremendous sense of humor, which I know will
be missed,’ Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) told Roll Call through a spokesman.
"Gordon, currently in his 12th term in office,
took over Beard’s seat in the 6th district from Al Gore, who was
Beard’s immediate successor.
"Funeral services for Beard, who is survived by his wife and
three children, will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the French Huguenot
Church in Charleston."
